Recently, the mayor and city councilors of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma made the push for the city to begin working on a project that will lead to the creation of an esports arena. According to Mayor Craig Thurmond, creating an esports arena will bring professional esports teams and the booming gaming industry to the Oklahoma-based city.
“It’s a very big opportunity for other schools to be taking on,” said Broken Arrow High School sophomore Brandon Heuynh. “The industry is very big, it’s clearly expanding in viewership, money, all that stuff.”
According to the Oklahoma Esports League, there are 28 high schools in the state with an esports team. Furthermore, eight high-educational institutions in the state currently have an esports team, including the University of Oklahoma.
Recently, the Broken Arrow High School esports team took home a state title after the group finished first in the Oklahoma eSports League “Overwatch” playoffs. The team also finished third in the “League of Legends” playoffs.
