It was recently announced that Chinese market regulators blocked Tencent’s plans to merge the video game streaming sites Huya and DouYu. According to a report from Bloomberg, the merger was officially rejected on July 10th due to antitrust regulations in the country.
Tencent first announced plans to combine the two companies last year. According to the data firm MobTech, a merger between the two businesses would have given Tencent control of about 80% of the Chinese video game streaming market.
In a statement, Tencent said it “will abide by the decision, comply with all regulatory requirements, operate in accordance with applicable laws and regulations, and fulfill our social responsibilities.”
Huya and DouYu are currently the first and second-ranked esports streaming websites in China. Tencent owns over a third of DouYu and 36.9% of Huya.
