Opera is the latest organization to create a built-in game for the company’s web browser Opera GX. Operius was officially launched by Opera on October 21st, 2021.
Operius is an arcade-based sci-fi shooter game that will pop up whenever the browser detects the wi-fi is down. The game is set in a world where all computers simultaneously lose connection to the internet. Players are tasked with restoring the world’s connection to the web by navigating through a virtual UFO hovering over the Earth once the internet is taken out. Users must shoot at aliens and dodge obstacles to advance further in the game.
“We believe gamers deserve a better game than jumping dinosaurs or surfers. That’s why we started the Opera GX game jam and found Operius. Operius is a highly addictive ultimate offline game to rule them all,” said Maciej Kocemba, Head of Opera GX. “In creating the shortlist, we were looking for a game that’s fun to play, looks and sounds fun, and, most importantly, that you want to play over and over again.”
Operius is completely free to play. The game can be accessed by simply typing “opera://operius” into supporting web browsers and hitting “enter”.
