A recent update to Tesla’s infotainment system will now let you play video games, even while you’re driving. While the update was intended only for passengers to play, there aren’t any tools to recognize whether the driver is actually the one playing or not. The system displays a warning screen that says “playing while the car is in motion is only for passengers,” but since the interior cameras (which track eye movement for the auto-pilot) don’t register the center console, it is impossible to stop the driver from playing games if they want to.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has confirmed it is looking into the issue, although it has yet to open a formal investigation. “We are aware of driver concerns and are discussing the feature with the manufacturer,” a spokesperson said. “The Vehicle Safety Act prohibits manufacturers from selling vehicles with design defects posing unreasonable risks to safety.”
Many automakers restrict infotainment usage to only when the car is parked. Even if it is a passenger who’s playing, there’s still a high risk that the driver will be tuning into the gameplay on screen every now and then, detracting from their focus on the road. As per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,142 people died in crashes that involved distracted drivers in 2019 alone.
So far, neither Tesla nor its CEO Elon Musk has commented on the reports.
