Discord recently announced content creators will soon be allowed to sell premium subscriptions to fans. This new service is expected to make the monetization process easier for Discord users and content creators.
“We are on the same mission and we want them to succeed. For that to happen, we believe it’s really critical that we make it sustainable to run community servers on Discord,” Derek Yang, the senior product manager at Discord, said in an interview with VentureBeat. “Our mission is to empower and reward creators to sustainably create belonging here. And we think that by creating the tools that led these community creators to earn money, many of them will run more healthy, engaged, long-lasting communities here.”
Premium Membership channels will have a blue star next to their names. If you attempt to enter these channels, you’ll be offered priced out tiers of access that have been set by the creator. It is expected that testing on this offering may be seen “in the coming weeks.”
Premium memberships will be fully native to Discord. As a result, Discord will set the terms of payment directly (90/10 split with creators). Discord communities will be allowed to keep 90% of membership revenues.
