On November 8th, an esports betting bill, that was proposed by Assemblyman Ron Dancer, was officially signed into law by Governor Phil Murphy. This will see sports betting in the state expanded to cover esports competitions where the majority of players are over 18.
“E-sports have exploded in recent years and we need to allow the casinos and racetracks in New Jersey to participate in this revenue-generating business,” said Dancer. “New Jersey needs to stay competitive and this law will allow us to be a part of the growing popularity of e-sports. “I thank the governor for signing this.”
Previous sports betting laws had forbidden gambling on electronic sports and competitive video games outside of a few select international events. However, the new law revises the definition of sporting events to allow betting on esports competitions where the majority of players participating are adults.
