Schalke 04 Sells “League Of Legends European Championship” License To Team BDS For $31.47M

The German soccer team Schalke 04 recently announced it had completed the sale of its League of Legends European Championship (LEC) license to Team BDS. According to a press release, the license will be sold at the end of the 2021 Summer Split for $31.47 million.

Schalke 04’s LEC spot originally cost up to $23.75 million when it was purchased in 2019. This means the price tag increased by almost $8 million over the last two years.

“We are thrilled to finally be able to participate in such a challenging and exciting competition,” said Alexandre Lopez, the Head of Strategy for Team BDS. “This really is the next step for BDS and we hope to feature among the best in League of Legends. We are grateful towards Riot Games and FC Schalke 04 for placing their trust in our team, and we hope to continue FC Schalke 04’s work in developing esports as a discipline of its own.”

Team BDS is a Swiss gaming company that is based in Geneva. The organization already has teams competing in titles like FIFA, Rocket League, Fortnite, and Rainbow Six Siege.
