According to a recently leaked document, China is reportedly planning on banning video games that “don’t promote ‘correct values’ and ‘accurate understanding’ of the country’s history.” This ban is expected to include the portrayal of “effeminate” male characters, the promotion of LGBTQ+ relationships, and the showing of characters with no “clear gender.”
“If regulators can’t tell the character’s gender immediately, the setting of the characters could be considered problematic and red flags will be raised,” the leaked government memo said.
According to Chinese officials, video game plots should not have “blurred moral boundaries.” Additionally, titles that “distort facts or deliberately provoke controversy” are now expected to be the subject of much scrutiny in the country.
