On December 18th at DisCon III in Washington D.C., the winers of the 2021 Hugo Awards were announced, and for the first time ever, one of them went to a video game: Supergiant’s Hades. Hades is a game about the prince of the underworld living and dying through multiple attempts to escape hell. Inspired by Greek mythology, the game was released in 2018 to much critical acclaim.
“We are incredibly honored to be the first ever recipient of a Hugo Award in the category of Best Video Game,” said Greg Kasavin, Creative Director at Supergiant. “We, myself included, grew up experiencing these classic works of science fiction and fantasy…so to have earned this distinction all this time later, especially alongside such an incredible slate of nominees of all shapes and sizes, from teams big and small, it really means the world.”
The Best Video Game category was new this year, and was introduced as a response to ongoing requests for it to be included. The category is currently just a one-off thing for now, with no confirmation about whether or not it will be given out next year.
