Fanatec has joined forces with BMW Motorsport to create a brand new, state-of-the-art simulated racing steering wheel that is identical in every way to the actual wheel used in the M4 GT3 racecar. After pre-orders for the product went live on December 20th, the racing wheel was reportedly sold out “within minutes of the landing page going live.”
“To be clear, this isn’t a replica. The same exact wheel used in the real-world BMW M4 GT3 race car can also be used for sim racing,” writes Thomas Harrison-Lord of Motorsport.com. “In fact, every wheel in the M4 GT3 is manufactured by sim racing market leaders Fanatec.”
The product’s price was first revealed to be $1399.95 when pre-orders went live in December. Another round of pre-orders took place later that day. However, the products ordered during the later round are not expected to be shipped out until September 2022.
The Profit‘s Take:
$1400 is not cheap. So, it is noteworthy that this sim-racing wheel sold out in minutes. It makes me think that COVID is doing wonders for the sim racing market. People are paying as much for a sim-racing wheel as they would for a gaming PC. I get the sense that Fanatec probably made a good number of wheels, and people are just underestimating the demand for high-end sim racing gear.
