The Mental Health Foundation is calling on members of the gaming industry to take more steps to ensure the safety and well-being of gamers. This comes after the organization issued five recommendations for game makers following the conclusion of a research project that studied the habits and playstyles of 24 gamers.

The first two points suggested working to eliminate negative behaviors and toxic actions in the gaming industry. These points mentioned tackling harmful behaviors, toxic communities, and discrimination. The foundation also said that mental health content should be embedded in games. The final two points said game makers should raise awareness of mental wellbeing and create more mental health-focused designs in games.

“The games industry has a huge role in reaching people who need to protect their mental health,” the group said. “The industry has enormous potential to act as a source for good in helping to promote mental wellbeing. What’s more, our study shows that players are expecting the games industry to take action on this. Players are asking you to do more: not because you have to, but because you have the opportunity and power to make a positive difference to their lives.”

The Mental Health Foundation is a non-profit entity that is based in the United Kingdom. The organization was originally founded in 1949.
