A Reddit user recently shared a video of an entrance ceremony for South Korea’s Yeungnam University that took place within the Minecraft metaverse. This allowed students to celebrate the beginning of their collegiate lives via a virtual space constructed in Minecraft to reflect the campus that they will spend the next few years living at.
The students responsible for creating this digital experience are members of the Yeungnam University Minecraft Server Club (YUMC). Despite being founded last month, the club already boasts 300 members, who came together to create an auditorium, unique cosmetics, a detailed campus, a fireworks display, and more in the hit video game.
“I felt bad over the loss of the value of communication and interaction within school due to the prolonging of COVID-19,” said Seo Seung-wan, president of YUMC. “I organized this club thinking that it would be nice to form a student community for engaging in interactive activities in the virtual space of Minecraft.”
The Minecraft metaverse has proved to be a valuable asset for the school. The digital space has been used for several other important Yeungnam University occasions including meetings and even military send-offs.
