While it’s standard practice for most developers to arrange and fund all travel expenses to a chosen host city for tournaments, Respawn Entertainment received a lot of backlash for its decision to not financially support all qualified teams. Not only were said teams and their respective parent organizations upset, but fans and esports personalities were also outraged over Respawn’s tight purses. As an arm of EA Sports, Respawn has plenty in the bank, but fans were left stunned as team representatives took to social media to plea for sponsors to help fund the trip after the developers turned a blind eye.
EA’s official rules stated that the developers would only provide travel expenses for the top five teams in APAC North, EMEA, and North America, and the top two teams in APAC South and SAM, leaving over half of the qualified squads scrambling to fund their own way to Stockholm, Sweden. After enough outrage, EA took to Twitter to amend its rules and offer a mea culpa:
“We’ve heard your feedback regarding travel,” tweeted EA. “As a result, we’ve made the decision to cover travel expenses for all starting players participating at live events for the remainder of Year 2.”
While EA has yet to officially amend its rulebook, teams have now received confirmation of the ruling and can go about refunding the donations given to them by their benefactors.
The ALGS Stockholm Major will kick off on May 29th, the first international event in Apex Legends for over two years.
