Cyberpunk 2077 Is Finally Finding Success

Almost two years after its initial release, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally starting to live up to expectations. In fact, on September 28th, game developer CD Projekt Red announced that Cyberpunk 2077 had surpassed the 20 million units sold mark.

The last time we were updated on the game’s sales numbers was April of this year when we learned that Cyberpunk had exceeded the 18 million units sold mark. Based on this information, we can safely say that at least two million more Cyberpunk 2077 units were sold since then.

That isn’t the only big piece of news for Cyberpunk. Beyond that, CDPR also announced that the game averaged over 1 million players a day during the week of September 18th. On top of that, Cyberpunk 2077 recorded its highest concurrent player count on Steam earlier this month.

There are a few factors causing this Cyberpunk resurgence. One thing is the recently launched Cyberpunk: Edgerunners TV show that made its debut on Netflix a couple of weeks back. The show has been a huge hit so far, registering a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The announcement of the game’s first and only major DLC expansion pack, Phantom Liberty, has also generated a lot of buzz around the game. That DLC pack won’t be coming out until next year, but it has still helped boost the game’s player count.

After a somewhat disastrous launch, it’s good to see people finally playing Cyberpunk 2077 in large numbers. I’m sure these figures will only continue to grow.

The Profit‘s Take:

This could be the redemption story of the year in the world of video games. Lowered prices, a Netflix show, and the recent patch have created a perfect storm that allows for the resurgence of this game. It would be ironic if Netflix became a video game kingmaker. “Your game can only be a success if it has a Netflix show.” However, just because more people are playing your title this month, it doesn’t mean that the game is necessarily good.
