The European Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) unanimously adopted a resolution that would lead to a vote on whether or not the EU should create a long-term plan to support video games. CULT is asking the EU to increase the number of video game productions in Europe with more funding.
Earlier this year, the Creative Europe program used $5.8 million to support video game productions. However, CULT argued that funding was insufficient. CULT has also claimed that the European gaming industry is in the midst of a talent shortage.
The resolution supports several initiatives related to the preservation, showcasing, and promotion of European history. This includes the creation of a European Video Game Observatory to provide data on the industry. A “European Video Game” label would also be launched thanks to this resolution.
The European Parliament will vote on CULT’s resolution next month. The vote will take place during a parliamentary mini-session on November 9th and 10th.
