Parties Settle Over Shooting At Esports Tournament In 2018

Before jury selection could begin involving claims brought by dozens of plaintiffs against Electronic Arts and others over a mass shooting at an esports tournament in Jacksonville from 2018, it appears the parties have reached a settlement. David Katz shot and killed two people before turning the gun on himself at a Madden 19 tournament at the Jacksonville Landing marketplace, and according to court documents, plaintiffs claim the defendants (including EA) failed to provide proper security for the tournament.

The Jacksonville Landing, now demolished, had a history of violence and crime, and should have been better protected by the defendants according to the plaintiffs in the case.

In addition to Electronic Arts, defendants include Chicago Pizza and Sports Grill II, Inc., affiliated with the “GLHF” game site hosting the tourney, and the various owners of The Jacksonville Landing. They deny any responsibility for the shooting.

However, with a settlement having been reached, it appears the case has finally come to an end. It is not yet known publicly what the parties have agreed upon.
