India Today Gaming, which is the esports division of India Today Group, announced it was forming the Esports Premier League. This eight-team league, which will kick off its next season in early 2022, will be centered around Garena’s hit game Free Fire.

“I think it’s a great initiative undertaken by the India Today team who are prioritizing Esports and I feel that the India Today Group who is promoting Esports, will go a long way,” said Mr. Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi, the minister of sports and youth affairs for Punjab. “I congratulate India Today on this occasion.”

The eight teams participating in the ESPL will be named after famous cities in India. So far, seven teams have been unveiled: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Punjab, and Rajasthan.

The first season of the ESPL was held in August of this year. The Mumbai Marshals placed first in the tournament, earning a prize of roughly $34,000.
