Connecticut Permits Esports Wagering

Connecticut’s legal sports betting legislature, which includes language permitting licensed operators in the state to accept wagers on esports events, has officially come into effect. Bill HB 6451, which authorizes legal sports betting in the state was passed earlier this year and became official in late October. The bill recognizes esports as a “sporting event,” and allows operators to post and accept bets on competitive gaming events.

The state defines esports as “electronic sports and competitive video games played as a game of skill,” which would accommodate markets on a wide range of game titles and events. The bill also authorizes betting on intercollegiate esports events, except for those which include Connecticut-based teams. Athletes, coaches, referees, or any other individual participating in esports are prohibited from placing a wager on an event or match in which they are involved in.

The three licensed sportsbooks that are currently live in the state include DraftKings, FanDuel, and PlaySugarHouse.

Connecticut joins several other U.S. states to include esports in its legal sports betting industry. This includes its tri-state neighbor New Jersey. In July, the Garden State passed Bill A637 to authorize bets on esports events, although operators are limited to accepting only up to a $100 wager, with a potential winning bet of no more than $500. If sanctioned by the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), that wager limit could increase.
