As esports viewership grows, the industry is set to hit $1.8 billion by 2022, according to Newzoo. Initially, projections had the market closer to the $1 billion mark, but the industry is now on pace to shatter those original estimates.
With mobile gaming set to make up 45% of the total global game markets in 2021, its popularity has already spilled over into key growth markets like China, which Newzoo estimates drove $385 million in Esports revenue in 2020. Additionally, there is tremendous potential in emerging markets with dense populations that rely more on mobile devices for internet access. Mobile-first nations like India, China, parts of Africa, and Southeast Asia, are expected to have a significant impact on industry growth in these regions.
As esports continues to grow, these numbers could end up exceeding the $1.8 billion dollar projections. Revenue could be upwards of $2 billion by next year.
