Sony Cuts PlayStation 5 Production Outlook For Next Year

Sony, like many tech companies worldwide, is suffering from supply chain issues and semiconductor shortages. As a result, they have been forced to lower their full-year production forecast for PS5s from their target 16 million units to 15 million by March 2022.

Despite the setbacks, the PlayStation 5 has sold 13.4 million units globally since it was launched in November of 2020, making it the fastest-selling console in Sony’s history. However, the company’s original target of 22.6 million units sold in the next fiscal year is looking more and more unattainable given the current climate and their limited stock.

Sony isn’t the only gaming company to be hit hard by these supply-chain issues. This announcement follows the news from earlier this month, where Nintendo was forced to cut its Switch sale forecast by 1.5 million (6%), and Valve was forced to delay the release of the Steam Deck by two months to February 2022.

Frustration around Sony’s limited inventory is growing among game makers as well as fans of the company. One top Japanese game publisher has found players who used to buy PlayStation versions of its games are now gradually shifting to purchasing the PC edition, according to an executive who asked not to be named. PlayStation 5 games have so far failed to make an impact on Japanese sales charts, which are dominated by Nintendo’s Switch platform, market data shows.
