Atari recently announced that it had acquired MobyGames. The deal for the user-driven video game database cost $1.5 million. According to NME, “it’s not yet known what Atari’s plan” is for MobyGames.
MobyGames is a gaming history resource for fans to log and track experiences. The company provides a place to upload achievements, data, and other information from the games users play. The database currently maintains records on 300,000 different games.
MobyGames was originally launched in 1999. In 2011, Gamefly first bought the organization. Then it was acquired by BlueFlame Labs after a redesign in 2013. Now, it is owned by Atari.
The Profit‘s Take:
What the hell is Atari up to? I can’t figure it out. I know they said they are moving away from free-to-play, so where does a video game internet history database fit into all of this? How does Atari monetize this database? This doesn’t fit in at all with their “plan” to focus on console and PC gaming. This company and brand are totally adrift. I don’t know if there’s any hope for them in this landscape.
