Valve recently confirmed that it will not be encouraging the release of exclusive games for the Steam Deck. On the Valve FAQ page, the organization said it has no interest in creating titles that are exclusive to the upcoming portable video game console.
On the FAQ page, Valve was asked if the organization was interested in making exclusive games for the device. The company’s answer was short and sweet. “No, that doesn’t make much sense to us. It’s a PC and it should just play games like a PC,” Valve wrote.
The Steam Deck has been making headlines throughout November and December. Last month, Valve announced that the Steam Deck’s release was being delayed two months. Now, the handheld gaming device is not expected to be available until February 2022.
The Profit‘s Take:
Valve is a video game developer. Why wouldn’t they make one or two exclusives for the Steam Deck’s launch? I mean, the beauty of Valve is that they make hardware AND games. So, why not do both? That would add value to this offering. Given Valve’s capabilities, it makes good business sense for them to make exclusives. I think the pre-order sales of the Steam Deck are probably quite strong, but I haven’t seen any numbers at this time. Unfortunately, Valve does have a horrible track record with hardware, so it’s possible the Steam deck may struggle upon its initial release. Regardless, I’m excited to see its sales numbers. There’s a whole market of PC gamers that would play mobile games if there were a good piece of hardware out there for them. I think that’s where the Steam Deck will come into play. But, if you don’t have a PC, I think you’re way less likely to purchase a Steam Deck. Consoles have a fixed lifespan, but if this device is a success, then I wouldn’t be surprised if they release follow-up products outfitted with better hardware and gaming capabilities. I am never worried about hardware because making improvements to devices is the nature of the tech industry. I have already put down money to pre-order this product. It’s the one mobile gaming device that piques my interest because I have a huge library of Steam games. February can’t get here soon enough.
