Ubisoft’s NFT Offering Met With Backlash

On December 13th, Ubisoft moved forward with the launch of its NFT offering. This move saw the company create “Wolf Enhanced Helmet A” NFTs based on the hit game Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Only 250 NFTs were made available by the organization. In order to acquire these digital tokens, users had to have played Ghost Recon Breakpoint for at least 600 hours on PC devices. Once these helmets are secured, an NFT marketplace will be established within the Ubisoft Quartz system where players can sell and trade these assets.

The other item being sold during this offering are 2,000 NFT copies of a gun. Users do not need to hit a minimum amount of playtime to acquire these assets. Moreover, the next NFT that will be released by the company is a pair of pants that requires 100 hours of gameplay in order to be acquired.

“To me, NFTs in gaming goes beyond previous critiques of NFTs like ‘haha people are paying money for dumb JPG cartoons’ as they have the ability to fundamentally transform the industry in a very negative way,” writes Forbes‘ Paul Tassi. “I do not believe that players will embrace this concept if it spreads, but I also know this is not the last big studio that’s going to try something like this. EA is practically foaming at the mouth trying to figure out how to integrate NFTs into Ultimate Team, no doubt. This road is dark and dangerous and eventually, goes straight off a cliff. Stay far away.”

The Profit‘s Take:

This prompts a question: why is there so much hate for these NFTs when it doesn’t feel any different from what we have been doing for years? The WoW frostsaber quest is a great example of this. People would need to do the same quest a thousand times over to get something that very few people had. It’s surprising that gets no hate, but NFT helmets are “the death of gaming.” Maybe gamers just don’t want or care about this? Maybe that’s why this is garnering such a negative response? I’m not convinced this has a ton of value on secondary or tertiary markets. But, even if you don’t like this, I don’t get the hate. You can still play Ghost Recon Breakpoint without having to buy this or make any sacrifices. It’s not like this is stopping you from enjoying the game.
