Lakota Nation Invitational Offering Esports Tournaments This Year

Students at Lakota Tech High School in South Dakota spent this month registering for the institutions first-ever esports tournaments, which will see them competing either one-on-one or as a team in games like Fortnite and Apex Legends. The school is partnering with students from School of Mines, who will also be streaming games on Twitch along with providing broadcasters for them.

“When you look at esports events across the nation, these events are probably even competing with some of the professional events and activities,” said Leonard “Yamni” Jack, LNI Activities Director and Esports Coordinator. “And I’m hoping that we grow and we might even be doing our own event. You know, some time in the future once everyone gets on board. So, we’re excited.”

Five schools are competing in the event, with around 10-15 students per team. To accommodate the large numbers, Lakota Tech brought in ten extra PCs. The tournaments officially began on December 16th and will run through the rest of 2021.
