Salina Moves Another Step Closer To Possible Esports Arena

This month the Salina City Commission voted 5-0 to support a potential esports arena in the city. The proposal has the city in Kansas redeveloping Memorial Hall into an arena and multipurpose facility, a concept by Hutton Corporation. If built, the arena at 410 West Ash Street would also be designated to hold public events, banquets, and other large gatherings.

One aspect of the expression of support is that Hutton would present a proposal to the commission for the redevelopment “within a reasonable period of time.” Mayor Melissa Hodges and other commissioners asked what a reasonable period consisted of, as they did not want the building to just sit as they waited on a single company to come up with a plan.

Mike King, Hutton’s vice president of business development, assured the commission the timeline of a proposal would be quick. “We’re looking in the six-month timeframe to have something back to you,” King said.

Finally, the passed resolution also states the city would not solicit any other proposals for development of Memorial Hall. City Manager Mike Schrage said in a situation like that, the city would probably check with Hutton on the status of its proposal.
