GSC Game World Cancels NFT Plans Following Backlash

GSC Game World, the developer of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, announced this month that it would be auctioning off NFTs but canceled their plans the following day after backlash from gamers and fans alike. The “expensive receipts” would have granted owners a presence in the game, which meant their faces would be pasted onto the head of NPCs through face scanning. GSC must have expected blowback when it made the announcement, as it tried to ease fans’ sentiments by explaining that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 wasn’t going to become a “blockchain-based game.” However, the response they got was so negative and severe, that the entire project was scrapped.

“Dear Stalkers,” GSC tweeted. “We hear you. Based on the feedback we received, we’ve made a decision to cancel anything NFT-related in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. The interest of our fans and players are the top priority for the team. We’re making this game for you to enjoy – whatever the cost is. If you care, we care too. With love, GSC Game World Team.”

Although the initial reaction skewed negatively, some fans welcomed the NFT auction. Over 107,000 people signed up for a chance to own a Stalker NFT.

While NFTs have become a large part of the gaming ecosystem, they are not universally loved, nor are they appropriate for many games. And while the Stalker NFT is officially dead, GSC Game World likely has something else NFT-related in mind for the future… just with a different game.
