U.K. Survey Says Tomb Raider Is The Best Gaming Film Adaption

A recent survey conducted by Compare The Market found that 2018’s Tomb Raider is the United Kingdom’s favorite video game movie. The survey sampled 1,001 adults in the U.K. who had previous experience with both “playing video games and watching movies.” 33.2% of respondents chose Roar Uthaug’s film interpretation of the long-running action-adventure Tomb Raider franchise as being among their favorites. Further illustrating the Tomb Raider love, 19.5% of voters offered praise for 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, resulting in the Angelina Jolie-starring film coming in third place.

2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog, directed by Jeff Fowler, and stars Ben Schwartz as the titular character, was ranked as the U.K.’s second favorite video game movie with 29.5% of votes. The other films that cracked the top ten list include 2021’s Mortal Kombat at number four, 2017’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter at number five, 2017’s Assassin’s Creed at number six, 2020’s Monster Hunter at number seven, 2019’s Detective Pikachu at number eight, 2016’s Warcraft at number nine and 2015’s Hitman: Agent 47 at number ten.

The Tomb Raider franchise began with Eidos Interactive’s original game in 1996. Since then, there have been over a dozen individual titles, which have sold over 85 million copies worldwide as of this year. Lara Croft is one of the most popular and recognizable video game protagonists of all time; she has her own spot on the Walk of Game, the video game industry’s answer to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and currently holds six Guinness World Records.

While 2018’s Tomb Raider received mixed reviews from critics, Compare The Market’s survey indicates that the movie resonated with a relatively large portion of gamers and moviegoers in comparison to other video game-based flicks. While Warner Bros. Pictures greenlit a sequel, filming has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While it will likely be a while before the sequel hits theaters, there are several other Tomb Raider adaptations in the works to the delight of gamers and fans. An anime based on Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’s reboot trilogy is underway at Netflix and Captain Carter’s Hayley Atwell has been cast as the voice of the gun-toting explorer. Moreover, a Tomb Raider tabletop role-playing game is being launched to celebrate the franchise’s 25th anniversary.
