According to Sensor Tower, Americans spent $966.8 million on action games for mobile devices last year. This represents a 68.9% year-over-year increase from 2020 to 2021. It also means that mobile action games were the fastest-growing genre last year in terms of revenue generated.
Open World Adventure games dominated the action subgenre, generating $418.3 million last year. Genshin Impact played a huge role in the genre’s success since the game accumulated $406.3 million in the United States in 2021, making it the most successful action game in the country. Marvel Contest of Champions came in second followed by Dragon Ball Legends in third.
Hypercasual games were the second most popular titles in the United States last year. With $111 million in revenue, this category experienced a growth of 43% year-over-year.
With $5.1 billion, puzzle games were the largest category in terms of spending last year. Casino games placed second with $4.8 billion in spending. Strategy games came in third place on the list with $4.3 billion.
