Pilot Esports Competition Being Introduced At 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Global Esports Federation (GEF) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) recently announced that the two parties will be introducing a pilot esports competition at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in England this summer. This marks the first time that esports will be featured at the Commonwealth Games, which have been held every four years since the inaugural event in 1930.

“Commonwealth Esports Championships provides an excellent opportunity to pilot esports close to the Commonwealth Games. This will allow us to review the long-term relationship between the Commonwealth Games and esports as we continue to evolve and explore future editions of our event and what they could look like,” said Dame Louise Martin, President of the CGF. “I would like to thank the Global Esports Federation for their partnership with this exciting event, including the British Esports Association and the Business and Tourism Programme, who will help us bring this concept to life.

The esports event will feature athletes participating in “multi-genre global titles.” While no video games have been confirmed at this time, The Daily Mail mentioned that Dota 2 could be one of the titles we see at the event.

The Commonwealth Esports Championships will be held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Birmingham, England. The event will take place on August 6th and 7th of this year. Leading up to the championships will be the Commonwealth Esports Forum convention which takes place on August 5th.
