The University of Mary Washington Department of Athletics recently announced the school will be launching a brand new esports program this summer. The program, which will feature both competitive and casual play, is expected to begin competing in the Fall of 2023.
“At this moment in time, we have an excellent opportunity to introduce a new team sport program that aligns well with University priorities and has high potential to attract and retain students,” said Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. “We are really drawn to the inclusive nature of esports.”
Catullo also explained that the school will spend the next several months searching for an esports director. Moreover, the university will aim to identify proper venues to host the team around the UMW campus.
The University of Mary Washington is a public school based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The college has a student body of roughly 4,000 people.
