According to a report that was recently released by Digital Development Management, video game investments garnered $38.5 billion in 2021. This represents a 192% year-over-year increase. On top of that, 2021 saw the most investment and M&A activity of all time in the gaming industry. A total of 765 deals were tracked during 2021, a 61% increase year-over-year. Meanwhile, total M&A activity reached $37.6 billion last year.
This report also provided some insight into investment and M&A activity for the fourth quarter of 2021. DDM registered 243 disclosed investment deals that brought $4 billion into the industry. Q4 2021 M&A activity hit $2.1 billion thanks to the 78 deals that were closed during the quarter.
Blockchain gaming reportedly made up more than half of all fourth-quarter gaming company investments. The report highlighted Zynga’s $525 million purchase of StarLark and Scopely’s $1 billion acquisition of GSN as some of the biggest moves of the quarter.
