Kalamazoo Parks And WMU Esports Partner To Host Mario Kart Racing League

Western Michigan University’s (WMU) esports arena, the Little Theater Building, is set to host a Mario Kart Racing League event being put on by Kalamazoo Parks and WMU Esports for middle school students. The league will run for six weeks from March 14th to April 20th with a postseason tournament on Saturday, April 23rd.

“Esports has been gaining popularity for several years and we’re thrilled to be able to offer these new programs for youth in our community,” said Pete Aerts, Recreation Coordinator at Kalamazoo Parks. “It’s a great way for students to make friends and connect with others in a friendly competition. WMU Esports has been such a great partner and their support makes these new programs possible.”

Students will compete weekly for points, racing as their favorite character in Mario Kart for Nintendo Switch. Students can register for one of four session options: Mondays at 5:30 PM or 6:45 PM, or Wednesdays at 5:30 PM or 6:45 PM. Each week, students will race eight times on two tracks during their hour-long session. Points will be recorded throughout the league to place racers in flights for the postseason tournament.

Registration is $68 for City of Kalamazoo residents and $75 for non-residents. Students were allowed to sign up online or in person at the Kalamazoo Parks office at 251 Mills Street through Friday, March 11th. Launched in the Fall of 2021 with a Super Smash Bros League, this will be the second session of the new esports program.
