The Ontario Government recently announced it had launched $791,000 scholarships for students enrolled in esports and other gaming-related collegiate programs. According to the announcement, these funds will go to assisting post-secondary students over a two-year period.
It is all part of the Ontario Esports Scholarship program, which aims to offer financial assistance to students focusing on video game design, development, and esports industry marketing. The first scholarships are expected to be given out to select students this coming fall.
“As the first province in Canada to recognize the educational value of esports design and development in this way, we will support students who are building skills that can lead to discoveries, innovation, training opportunities, and economic benefits for Ontario,” said Jill Dunlop, the Canadian Minister of Colleges and Universities. “This investment will help students pursue their passion and prepare for careers in the highly lucrative video game and esports sector, and to develop transferable skills valued by employers across countless industries.”
Canada has made a noticeable effort to support the fastest-growing industry in the world. According to a press release, over 55,000 Canadians currently hold full-time jobs in the gaming and esports industries.
The Profit‘s Take:
I love these types of developments in our industry. We have seen esports scholarships before, but this is the first time I have seen these types of programs supported at a government level. I love this and think the global gaming community needs more initiatives like this. Scholarships are necessary so that esports students can pay for school when the Canadian government eventually seizes their bank accounts.
