Ubisoft Unveils New Technology To Create Bigger Video Game Worlds

On March 18th, Ubisoft announced it was launching a brand new type of technology called Ubisoft Scalar. Through the use of cloud technology to ensure developers aren’t limited by hardware or time, Ubisoft Scalar will allow the organization’s development teams to create “game worlds that are bigger, more social, and richer than anything that’s ever been seen before at Ubisoft.”

This technology reportedly runs parts of Ubisoft’s game engines (like audio physics, A.I., etc.) as individual systems in the cloud, spreading the work across “a potentially unlimited number of machines.” Through this, Scalar will be able to leverage a “virtually infinite amount of computing power,” which will lead to large gamer worlds and even more concurrent players.

“When we started the studio in late-2017, we did so with the mandate to push the boundaries of game development and technology,” said Ubisoft Stockholm Managing Director Patrick Bach. “How could we reimagine what games could and should be in the future, and how do we build towards that? Most games are an iteration of what has been done before, building on the shoulders of giants. We wanted to break free and create something fresh and impactful.”

Scalar is expected to be rolled out to Ubisoft studios working on projects that require cloud computing. It is believed that Ubisoft Stockholm, the entity that launched the program, already has access to Scalar.
