The new Sonic movie is already breaking records! It was recently announced that Sonic The Hedgehog 2 generated $71 million in its domestic box office debut in the United States, making it the number one movie in the country for the week of April 11th.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had the best opening weekend numbers of all time for a video game movie adaptation. It was able to usurp the original Sonic the Hedgehog movie which brought in $58 million during its opening weekend in 2020.
In other parts of the world, the second Sonic movie made $37 million across 53 territories, bringing its international total to $70 million. This means that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 generated $141 million worldwide between March 30th and April 11th.
Unfortunately, the future of the film franchise is up in the air since Jim Carrey, who plays the main villain (Dr. Robotnik), is strongly considering retirement at this time. In an interview with IGN, producer Neal Moritz said that if Jim Carrey did retire, Robotnik would not appear in a potential third Sonic film.
As of this writing, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has grossed over $231 million worldwide. As a result, it has become the fifth highest-grossing film of 2022.
