Stadia Will Not Be Shut Down… For Now

It doesn’t sound like Google has any plans to do things differently with Stadia. According to reports from Game Rant, an anonymous source that spoke with the Killed by Google Twitter account claimed that a regional manager for the company said that Google is “beginning their exit plan” for Stadia. After those rumors swirled for a few days, Google responded, eventually saying that it has no plans to shut down Stadia.

In response to a tweet to user Blue Fire Demon that was sent out on July 29th, the Google Stadia Twitter account said, “Stadia is not shutting down. Rest assured, we’re always working on bringing more great games to the platform and Stadia Pro. Let us know if you have any other questions.”

And, while this announcement comes as an official confirmation of Google’s plans with the platform, not everybody is convinced with what they had to say. In fact, Twitter user Mad Radhu responded to Google’s tweet saying they were going to “bookmark this tweet and absolutely chaos dunk all over it in about six months, LMAO.”

It’s understandable that people are somewhat skeptical about the viability and future success of Google Stadia. After all, last February, developers at Google’s then recently formed video game studio were told the organization would be shut down just a week after Stadia’s Vice President and general manager, Phil Harrison, sent an email to staffers telling them they had made “great progress” with the studio.

Either way, for now, it still sounds like Google Stadia is alive and kicking.

The Profit‘s Take:

The headline is always depressing when it comes to Stadia. I got SO MUCH HATE for calling the death of Stadia years ago. As it turns out, I was so phenomenally right, which makes me feel vindicated. I don’t get the point or communication strategy behind denying what feels obvious to everybody. It’s possible most of the team just doesn’t know. The rumors are coming from the top where these decisions are being made. So, maybe the rank and file employees are isolated from the actual decision-making.
