Tencent Hit With More Gaming-Focused Lay-Offs

Tencent was recently forced to make more lay-offs in its gaming business unit. This time, the organization eliminated multiple positions at its gaming and entertainment website FanByte. The site’s editor-in-chief and head of media were just some of the many people that were laid off.

At 12:45 PM EST on September 15th, John Warren, the aforementioned head of media, took to Twitter to confirm he had been let go by FanByte. Shortly after that, Editor-in-Chief Danielle Riendeau announced that she had been laid off. Since then, many more people have been let go from FanByte.

While layoffs are never a welcome sight, it seems that Tencent made a few missteps when handling this organizational restructuring. According to FanByte employees, these layoffs came as “a total shock.” On top of that, some employees claimed they had worked with staffers just hours before they were fired.

After speaking with employees, it’s still not clear how many people were laid off from FanByte. As of 2:05 PM EST on September 15th, at least half a dozen employees had publicly announced they had been let go. Kotaku is reporting that it’s likely “this number will grow.”
