Disney Has Big Plans For Star Wars Games

It sounds like Disney has some pretty big plans for the future of Star Wars video games. According to GameSpot, Disney is reportedly hoping to put out two Star Wars games every year: a AAA title and a smaller title. Insider Gaming is reporting that Lucasfilm is on-board with this plan.

It’s also worth noting that this plan apparently includes several games that have already been announced. Some of the upcoming projects that have already been unveiled include Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is being made by Respawn Entertainment, Star Wars Eclipse, which is being developed by Quantic Dream, Star Wars: Hunters, and three more untitled games by Skydance Media, Respawn, and Ubisoft.

According to Gaming Insider, several more Star Wars games are currently in their pre-development phase. However, at this time, it’s unclear which of these games will be “smaller projects.”

This information also suggests that some of the games are still years away from being finished. A prime example of this is Star Wars Eclipse. Back in March, the game was reportedly delayed to 2027 at the earliest because developer Quantic Dream was struggling to find talent to add to its roster of creators. Hopefully, NetEase’s recent acquisition of Quantic Dream will bring more talent to the studio, allowing the game to be released sometime before then.

Either way, if you’re a fan of video games set in a galaxy far far away, it sounds like you will have plenty of things to look forward to over the next few years.

The Profit‘s Take:

Disney bought Star Wars for $4 billion, which is still ridiculously cheap by today’s standards. However, they haven’t made a lot of successful games since 2012, so this is an interesting change in strategy. Are we sure that people need two Star Wars games a year? Disney has a bad track record of making video games. They haven’t been able to put out games that live up to the hype surrounding them. This could be an outsourcing issue. Disney doesn’t have total control of studios because they outsource their video game development efforts. It feels like they’re trying to emulate Netflix’s release cadence. The Netflix model is most appealing on your first watch-through. But, a good video game could easily keep you entertained for six to 12 months. So, I think it’s tough to compare those two sides. I’m not convinced that two games a year is the right answer. I don’t think there’s a demand for that. People just want one REALLY GOOD Star Wars game. When you set out to make a lot of games, then there’s a better chance your game is bad, and you risk destroying your IP. If that happens, people wouldn’t be mad at whatever studio Disney is partnering with. They would be angry with Disney. Two games a year is a bit ambitious for Disney.
