Epic Games, Dove, And Women In Games Want To Improve Female Video Game Character Diversity

Recently, Women in Games, Epic Games, and Dove have joined forces to create a new program that aims to improve the representation and diversity of female video game characters. The Real Virtual Beauty program, as it’s being called, looks to support “young girls with self-esteem education across the virtual world.”

One part of this program will see companies run “real beauty in games” training courses. This initiative aims to “reflect the diversity” seen in everyday life while avoiding contributions “to stereotypes and biases in design.”

Also, Dove will release a collection of avatars through Epic’s ArtStation. This will raise the “standard for the authentic, diverse, and inclusive representation of women and girls.”

Also, Dove created a game within Roblox to coincide with this announcement. The theme of the game will be self-esteem, which will allow young girls to “experience more representative versions of beauty.”

“The representation of women in gaming platforms, products, and services has long been an issue,” said Women in Games’ CEO, Marie-Claire Isaaman. “What’s so important here is that the innovative tools and training reach the target audience, where there is the opportunity to make a real impact.”
