Sony Has Big Expectations For PS5s Next Year

According to sources that spoke to Insider-Gaming, Sony is reportedly planning on shipping 30 million PlayStation 5s during the 2023 fiscal year (March 2023 to March 2024). This comes after MST Financial senior analyst David Gibson said that Sony items shipped to the U.S. increased by 400% over the past year.

These figures were mentioned in an exclusive report from Insider-Gaming that revealed that a new PS5 with a detachable disc drive would be coming soon. Production on that device is expected to begin this April with the console hitting the market next September.

The report indicated that Sony is hoping to sell 18 million PlayStation 5s during the 2022 fiscal year. If the company can achieve that mark and sell over 30 million PS5s during FY23, that would represent a 70% year-over-year increase in sales.

12 million of the 30.5 million consoles being shipped out during FY23 will be “old” PlayStation 5s. Production of that console is expected to conclude next winter.
