What Is Bethesda’s Interest In Mobile Gaming?

It sounds like Bethesda Softworks is interested in doing more in the mobile gaming space. At least, that’s what Bethesda Game Studio’s Director Todd Howard is saying.

Howard recently appeared on an episode of the Lex Friedman Podcast. During this interview, he revealed that Bethesda has a “new mobile game that we’re working on that we haven’t announced yet that I am in love with.”

At this time, there aren’t many details surrounding the game. Although, Howard indicated that this will be a more in-depth experience than Bethesda’s last mobile game, Fallout Shelter. In fact, Howard claimed that “people will sit there for an hour or two… Large numbers of people will play it for hours a day.”

Bethesda doesn’t have a very big catalog of mobile games. Since the company was founded in 1986, they have only released three mobile titles: Fallout Shelter, The Elder Scrolls: Legends, and The Elder Scrolls: Blades. Whenever Bethesda does release this game, it’ll mark the organization’s first mobile title since 2019.

The Profit‘s Take:

This is so interesting because we have seen many other companies not have the success they were hoping for with mobile gaming. I’m specifically talking about Take-Two because I consider them to be very similar to Bethesda in a game developer sense. So, you can understand why I find this decision curious after Take-Two didn’t have a ton of mobile gaming success. At some point, the mobile gaming sector gets way too crowded. Can everybody really pivot to mobile? Maybe Bethesda’s parent company (Microsoft) wants to expand its presence in the Asian and Indian markets. But, if that’s the case, Microsoft should just buy more mobile publishers and developers. Let the PC and console game devs MAKE PC and console games.
