According to multiple sources, the National Payments Corporation of India is getting set to permanently ban all gaming transactions under 50 rupees on the organization’s popular Unified Payments Interface (UPI) channel. The new regulations reportedly took effect the weekend of April 17th.
This move is aimed at moderating the volumes of payments that go through UPI. The company reportedly has seen more bank outages and technical declines over the past month due to accelerated digital gaming during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“These transactions especially spiked during IPL matches, which has led to apprehensions among NPCI and member banks that increased transaction loads could lead to more system outages,” one source told The Economic Times.
