Valve Reportedly Working On Handheld Device

According to ARS Technica, Valve has reportedly been working on a handheld gaming device. The “Switch-like” portable PC could launch by the end of the year.

“Multiple sources familiar with the matter have confirmed that the hardware has been in development for some time, and this week, Valve itself pointed to the device by slipping new hardware-related code into the latest version of Steam, the company’s popular PC gaming storefront and ecosystem,” writes ARS Technica‘s Sam Machkovech.

At this time, it is being reported that the device does not have an official name. It is reportedly being called SteamPal thanks to a code dump collected by SteamDB.

The Profit‘s Take:

It’s hard to understand why Valve would be working on another piece of hardware, as they have had their fair share of failures in that area. However, the lure of mobile dollars is strong. Valve also probably is convinced of the same thesis I put forward a long time ago – that there is a market for “hardcore” mobile hardware. However, the company has so many other opportunities that are more obvious.
