South Korea Politician Proposes Bill To Protect Esports Tournaments

A new bill was recently proposed in South Korea that would give protections to esports tournament participants. The proposal, called “The Heroes Of The Storm Law”, will protect esports tournament participants from damages suffered due to last-minute event terminations and cancellations.

The law was proposed by Dong-Su Yoo. Yoo is a South Korean politician representing the Democratic Party of Korea.

“Professional gamers are investing in their teens to early-mid-20s, which is the most important period in a person’s life due to its characteristics, and as the cases of damaging cancellations aren’t few or minor, institutional protection measures must be introduced,” Yoo said.

According to the proposal, any producer or publisher, who owns the copyright title of a game, that intends to host an esports tournament in South Korea must notify all stakeholders in advance if the event is canceled or rules are changed. It is being reported that organizations could face fines as well if they fail to abide by this proposed law.

The Profit‘s Take:

South Korea is consistently at the forefront of the esports world. It’s unfortunate that the bill being proposed here is even necessary, but we have to protect against the bad actors in the tournament/event space.
