The University Of Texas Is Looking To Build An Esports Arena

James Buckley, the University of Texas’ director of facilities and operations, recently hinted at the possibility of the school constructing a dedicated esports arena sometime over the next few years. This comes following a brief conversation Buckley had with KXAN-TV.

“There is a noticeable void of an esports space on campus,” Buckley said. “We envision 24 to 30 stations where players can compete and we will have a place people can watch. Once we get our space built, I think the interest and likelihood of that could grow as we work with our development office.”

Right now, the esports team uses the underground area of UT’s student Union. An arena and upgrades to existing facilities will reportedly cost $15 million.

The University of Texas at Austin is one of the biggest school’s in the country with over 50K students. UT is also one of the best producers of professional athletes in traditional sports like football, basketball, and baseball.

The Profit‘s Take:

This is a trend to watch. We are going to see more and more schools invest significant dollars into esports and gaming facilities.
