On June 29th, Sony announced it had acquired Housemarque, the Finnish developer behind Returnal. This information was first reported in a tweet and was later confirmed by Sony in a blog post.
“Today I’m thrilled to welcome a new member to the PlayStation Studios family,” said Herman Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios. “I have been a fan of Housemarque since the studio’s early days when they introduced Super Stardust HD to PlayStation fans. Housemarque’s recent release of Returnal proves the studio is one with incredible vision, capable of creating memorable new games that resonate with our community. This addition enhances the creative force of PlayStation Studios, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Housemarque.”
At this time, rumors are swirling that Sony has plans to acquire Bluepoint Games also. This comes after Sony’s PlayStation Japan social media account tweeted out a promotional image “announcing an acquisition of Bluepoint Games” instead of Housemarque.
Housemarque Oy is a video game development company based in Finland. The organization is responsible for producing hit titles like Returnal, Nex Machina, and Matterfall.
