According to the Overwatch development team, the cowboy video game character, Jesse McCree, will reportedly be renamed this fall as part of a new narrative arc. This announcement comes after a sexual harassment lawsuit was brought up against Activision-Blizzard.
The character was originally named after one of the game’s developers, Jesse McCree. McCree was allegedly involved in a Blizzcon group chat where devs reportedly discussed recruiting women to perform “sexual favors”.
“We believe it’s necessary to change the name of the hero currently known as McCree to something that better represents what Overwatch stands for,” said the game’s development team in a recent social media post.
At this time, the character’s new name has not been revealed. However, Overwatch developers explained that the release of this new narrative arc will be delayed until later this year.
The Profit‘s Take:
Oh, look they renamed a character. Everything is solved. I can’t tell if this is a legal decision or a PR decision. Seems more PR to me.
