Roblox Launches Age Verification System

Roblox launched a new age verification system for the company’s hit gaming platform. This program will allow the organization to safely roll out new features that will be offered exclusively to users ages 13 and up.

“We have this really value around safety and civility, so we can’t just turn voice on for everyone,” said Roblox CEO David Baszucki in a June interview with Axios. “There’s a lot of things around what age, how we filter, how we feedback, so we’re being very thoughtful about that.”

Verifying your age on the platform is a two-step process. The first step requires an ID document check. After that, you must confirm your identity with a selfie to match the previously submitted document.

The age verification service was officially launched on September 21st. Over the course of the next few weeks, the system is expected to be made available worldwide on mobile and desktop devices.

The Profit‘s Take:

You sure have to jump through a lot of hoops to prove you are over 13 years old. It’s certainly possible that this ends up becoming a data breach nightmare at some point down the road, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. I don’t think this affects the under 13 audiences. They’re only going to get content that’s safe for children. This will likely impact the audience that wants more mature Roblox content. I get why they are taking these precautions. It will only take one bad slip up to truly sink this $30 billion organization. Still, they’re taking on a whole new form of liability with all this personal data they are tracking. The under 13 market is incredibly lucrative but it’s a very tricky minefield to navigate. One bad incident could potentially destroy your whole business. To me, this shows that Roblox is maturing as a platform.
