China Says Gaming Time Limit Loopholes Must Be Prevented

The Chinese state media says that loopholes allowing minors to bypass the country’s new laws aimed at capping gaming to three hours per week must be removed to prevent addiction. The new rules, which were introduced in August, limit the amount of time minors can spend on video games to three hours a week, a move it said was necessary to combat gaming addiction but has drawn the ire of young Chinese gamers.

“On some online trading platforms, there are game account rental and sales businesses, users can bypass the supervision by renting and buying accounts and play online games without restrictions,” reported the Communist Party’s official newspaper, The People’s Daily. “This means that there are still loopholes for teenagers to enter online gaming, which is worthy of attention.”

The article reports that some game trading platforms have said strict measures are being taken to prohibit minors from buying, selling, and renting accounts which they use to circumvent the rules. Families and schools are also urged to create a conducive environment “for the healthy growth of minors”, especially parents, as some minors use their identities to register for a gaming account, nullifying the gaming time limit.

Authorities in China, the world’s largest video game market, have worried for years about addiction to gaming and the internet among young people, setting up clinics that combine therapy and military drills for those with so-called gaming disorders.
