It was recently announced that individuals can now earn The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) by playing video games. The DofE Award is part of a project launched by the Royal Family of the United Kingdom that encourages the growth and development of education for young people in various areas and skillsets.
The DofE conducted a survey of over 1000 senior business leaders. Of those that responded, 71% said they could see the educational value of esports.
“Esports is one of the fastest-growing activities in the UK and helps young people develop essential skills,” said DofE CEO Ruth Marvel. “DofE has a proud history of evolving our programs to reflect the changing interests and needs of young people, so I’m delighted that, following a successful pilot, we’ve added esports to the DofE Skills list.”
To be recognized as a DofE activity, esports must be organized by a club or school-based organization. Additionally, participants will need to take part in other activities outside of esports to be considered for the awards.
